  • What is a domain name?

A domain name is your website's address on the internet, such as yourbusiness.com. It is what people type into a browser to find your site, and it is the part that comes after the @ in your email addresses. A domain has two parts: the name you choose and the extension, such as .com or .org. Once you register a domain, nobody else can use it while your registration is active.

  • How do I register a domain?

Type the name you want into the search box at the top of this page. If it is available, add it to your cart, choose how many years to register it for and complete checkout. If the name is already taken, try a different extension or a small variation of the name. Once your order is complete, the domain appears in your client area, where you can manage it.

  • How long can I register a domain for?

You can register a domain for one to three years at a time. A domain is never bought outright: you hold it for as long as you keep renewing it. You can renew at any point before the expiry date, and the new period is added to the time you already have, so renewing early does not waste anything.

  • Can I transfer a domain from another provider?

Yes. First unlock the domain at your current provider and ask them for its transfer code, also called an EPP or authorisation code. Then start the transfer from our Transfer a Domain page and enter that code when asked. Most transfers complete within five to seven days. Your website and email keep working during the move as long as you leave the nameservers unchanged.

  • What happens if my domain expires?

When a domain expires, it stops working, and so does any website or email address that uses it. Most extensions allow a short period after expiry in which you can still renew, sometimes for an extra fee, before the name is released for anyone to register. To avoid losing your domain, renew before the expiry date, or turn on auto-renewal in your client area so that it is renewed for you.

  • Do I need hosting to register a domain?

No. You can register a domain on its own to secure the name and decide what to do with it later. When you are ready, you can add hosting or email to it, or point it to a service you already use by changing its nameservers or DNS records. Many people register their domain first so that nobody else takes the name while they plan their website.
