How to transfer your domain
Four steps, most of them done in a few minutes. Your website and email keep working while the transfer runs.
-
1
Unlock your domain
Log in to your current provider and turn off the transfer lock, sometimes called the registrar lock.
-
2
Get the transfer code
Ask your current provider for the transfer code, also called an EPP or authorisation code.
-
3
Start the transfer
Enter your domain at the top of this page, add the transfer code and complete checkout.
-
4
Approve and wait
Your current provider may ask you to confirm by email. Most transfers then complete within five to seven days.
Before you start
A transfer goes through first time when these are in place.
- The domain is unlocked at your current provider.
- You have its transfer code. Some country extensions do not use one.
- It is more than 60 days old. Most extensions cannot be transferred within 60 days of being registered or of a previous transfer.
- It is not about to expire. Start at least two weeks before the expiry date to be safe.
- You can read the owner's email. Your current provider may send a confirmation message there.
What happens to your domain
A transfer changes who manages your registration. It does not change how your domain works.
Your site stays online
Your website and email keep working during the transfer, as long as you leave your nameservers as they are.
You keep your remaining time
For most extensions a transfer adds one year to your registration, on top of the time you already have.

After the transfer you renew and manage the domain from the same account as your hosting, email and invoices.

Contact us- How long does a domain transfer take?
Most transfers complete within five to seven days. The time is set by the rules of the domain registry and by how quickly your current provider releases the domain. Some providers let you approve the transfer straight away, which shortens the wait. You can check the status of the domain in your client area at any time.
- Will my website or email go down during the transfer?
No. A transfer changes who manages your domain registration, not where your website and email are hosted. As long as you leave your nameservers as they are, both keep working throughout. One thing to check: if your current provider also runs your DNS and will switch it off once the domain leaves, move your DNS records before you start.
- What is a transfer (EPP) code and where do I get it?
It is a password for your domain, also called an authorisation code or auth code. It proves that the person asking for the transfer is the owner. You get it from your current provider, usually in the domain's settings in their control panel, or by asking their support team. A few country extensions do not use a code at all.
- Why can't I transfer my domain yet?
The most common reasons are that the domain is still locked at your current provider, that the transfer code is wrong or has expired, or that the domain was registered or transferred less than 60 days ago. Most extensions do not allow a transfer during those first 60 days. Unlock the domain, ask for a fresh code and try again, or wait until the 60 days have passed.
- Do I lose the time left on my registration?
No. For most extensions, a transfer adds one year to your registration, and that year is added on top of the time you already have. For example, if your domain was due to expire in six months, it will expire in a year and a half after the transfer. A few country extensions work differently.
- How much does a transfer cost?
The price depends on the extension, and the current transfer prices are shown on this page. You pay once for the transfer. After that, the domain renews at the normal renewal price for its extension, which you can see on our domain pricing page.
